Enhancing the Total Ship Computing Environment Infrastructure Through UIML
Agency / Branch:
DOD / NAVY
Harmonia, Inc. proposes to address Human/Computer Interface (HCI) issues faced by the DD(X) program by investigating new and "breakthrough" software tools that utilize the User Interface Markup Language (UIML). The proposed tools interface with commercial off-the-shelf products and are designed to streamline the HCI design and development process without forcing DD(X) personnel to significantly change the process they currently follow. The approach centers on working closely with the ship system integrator industry to obtain input from experienced individuals to identify what is needed in engineering tools so as to develop HCIs that 1) promote commonality within the Total Ship Computing Environment (TSCE), 2) adhere to the Navy's proposed Open Architecture Computing Environment guidelines and 3) reduce lifecycle costs. During Phase I of this SBIR, Harmonia identified four DD(X) engineering problem areas based on DD(X) program priorities and targeted HCI tools to address them. Harmonia also worked on defining performance and functional requirements, identifying potential risks, conducting selected prototyping activities, and assessing commercial viability. During Phase II, Harmonia will develop functioning versions of each of the tools that comprise the DD(X) HCI Tool Suite and provide training, guidance, and other support activities to the DD(X) program.
