Title:
Advanced Miniature Optical Sensors for Space-Based Monitoring of the Ionosphere and Upper Atmosphere
Agency / Branch:
DOD / USAF
Contract:
FA8718-08-C-0021
Award Amount:
$750,000.00
Abstract:
As the Air Force moves toward the deployment of many smaller satellites, it would be useful to develop smaller versions of SSUSI and GUVI imagers to take advantage of these multiple platforms, so that global measurements could become an operational reality. The goal of Phase II shall be to develop hardware and software for a low-cost, high sensitivity optical sensor to provide remote sensing of the ionosphere and/or upper atmosphere from space platforms. The name of the new instrument is GUVITO (Global Ultra-Violet Ionosphere-Thermosphere Observatory).
