Award Amount:
$69,836.00
Abstract:
A versatile, low-cost satellite data link is proposed for use aboard manned or robotic environmental research aircraft. The link will allow remote users to access data aboard, the aircraft via a remote- file server, as well as to control instruments or even (with correct access privileges) the flight plan of the aircraft. A commercial, geostationary satellite system (INMARSAT-M) is used, and the Internet is used as a means for distributing data. A unique system architecture and its custom hardware and software will be developed in this study. Phase I will focus on system trade studies and detailed design. Phase II will fabricate the hardware and code the software, conduct ground tests, and demonstrate in flight aboard the ONR "Chiron" optionally piloted aircraft.
