Abstract:
ADVANCES IN TECHNOLOGY INDICATE THAT IT MAY BE POSSIBLE TO DEVISE A RELATIVELY SIMPLE HIGH ACCELERATION GRADIENT ELECTRON BEAM ACCELERATOR BY COMBINING A LOW-EMITTANCE, LASER-DRIVEN PHOTOCATHODE WITH A RADIAL LINE LINAC WITH ULTRA-SHORT PULSES CONTROLLED BY A PICOSECOND PULSE LASER (SUGGESTED BY W. WILLIS). GRADIENTS OF 1 GEV/METER MAY BE POSSIBLE. THE FEASIBILITY OF THIS CONCEPT WILL BE ASSESSED BY DETEMINING THE PREFORMANCE POSSIBILITIES AND LIMITATIONS OF THE CATHODES, THE LINAC OPTICAL SWITCHING, THE ELECTROMAGNETIC PROPERTIES OF THE LINAC STRUCTURE, AND THE QUSLITY OF THE ACCELERATED ELECTRON BEAM.
