Agency: NSF
Contract: N/A
Award Amount: $55,605.00

Abstract:

NATIVE HAWAIIANS "FORM AN UNDERPRIVILEGED MINORITY BOTH IN HAWAII AND ON THE MAINLAND UNITED STATES, WITH CHARACTERISTICS SIMILAR TO NATIVE AMERICANS, BLACKS, AND HISPANICS" (ATU LIKE, 1989). THE NATIVE HAWAIIAN COMMUNITY HAS A HISTORY OF UNDERREPRESENTATION IN THE BUSINESS SECTOR. THE ULTIMATE OBJECTIVE IS TO HELP NATIVE HAWAIIANS CLOSE THE GAP ON THE TECHNICAL ASPECT OF AN AQUACULTURE/HYDROPONIC SYSTEM, WHILE OFFERING ACCESS TO BOKE' FARMS COMMUNITY-ORIENTED KITCHEN AS A MEANS OF COMPLETING THE FULL EDUCATIONAL CIRCLE. BOKE' FARMS PLANS TO SHARE ITS EXPERIENCE WITH AN INTEGRATED HYDROPONIC/AQUACULTURE SYSTEM AND TEACH THE CULTURING OF SNAILS, FISH, AND HYDROPONICS VIA THE EFFICIENT USE OF EFFLUENT WATER. HANDS-ON TRAINING AND YEARS OF EXPERTISE WILL BE TRANSFERRED TO THESE STUDENTS. IT IS HOPED THAT PARTICIPATING STUDENTS WILL EVENTUALLY BE ABLE TO CARRY THIS KNOWLEDGE TO THEIR OWN ENTREPRENEURIAL ENDEAVORS.
