Award Amount:
$729,999.00
Abstract:
Based on the success of developing high sensitivity laser vibrometers for landmine detections during the Phase I program, technologies are proposed for this Phase II research program to improve further the sensitivity and accuracy in locating buried landmines as well as increases in the efficiency and speed in scanning over the minefields of interest. Approaches to achieve these goals include the further enhancement in the sensitivity of photo-EMF laser vibrometers for landmine detection by refining the sensor host materials and dopant species and concentrations. An integral system-wise view point is to be adapted to design and fabricate the photo-EMF laser vibrometers to perform optimally in the battlefield environment. Arrayed photo-EMF vibrometers will be developed to perform simultaneous mappings over a larger area within the battlefield and enhance the scanning speed. A time-multiplexing technology is also proposed to offer high sensitivity, high throughput scanning landmine detection with significant reductions in costs, space, weight, and power consumptions. Signal processing algorithms and models will be introduced to improve the sensitivity and reliability of the vibrometer readings as well as the visibility of data perceived by the end users. Field tests of the laser vibrometers will also be conducted in government appointed facilities.
