70798B02-II This project will develop a novel, enzyme-catalyzed liquid membrane reactor to separate carbon dioxide from flue gas. The approach involves new reactor design, computer modeling, reaction kinetics testing, and reactor throughput measurement under simulated conditions. Phase I built and evaluated several new reactor designs, initiated computer modeling of the chemistry, and began the examination of candidate optimization regimens. The ability to significantly enrich the CO2 streams (up to 97%) was demonstrated. The designs use little energy and operate continuously. Phase II will select a specific design, construct a large-scale version for laboratory use, test gas samples from flue stacks, and conduct process engineering for a large, field test demonstration unit. Commercial Applications and Other Benefits as described by awardee: The membrane scrubber should provide a safe, environmentally friendly, economical, and efficient method for capturing the key greenhouse gas, carbon dioxide, and thereby reducing global warming.
