Title: CONVERSION OF SULFUR OXIDES CONTROL RESIDUE AND WASTE OILY EMULSION TO CEMENT PLANT FEED STOCK
Agency: DOE
Contract: N/A
Award Amount: $499,204.00

Abstract:

A TECHNOLOGY IS BEING EXAMINED THAT UTILIZES RESIDUE FROM ADVANCED SO2 CONTROL TECHNOLOGY COAL-COMBUSTION SYSTEMS IN THE SEPARATION OF WASTE EMULSIFIED OIL, AND THE SUBSEQUENT INTRODUCTION OF THE SOLIDIFIED MATERIAL TO A CEMENT PLANT AS AN INORGANIC RAW FEED AND LOW GRADE FUEL. PHASE I EXAMINES THE TECHNICAL, ENVIRONMENTAL, ECONOMIC, AND REGULATORY FEASIBILITY OF THE PLANNED PROCESS. SAMPLES OF AT LEAST FOUR SEPARATE TYPES OF HIGH SULFUR CONTENT RESIDUE WILL BE OBTAINED AND EXAMINED FOR THEIR PERFORMANCE AS RELATED TO EMULSION BREAKDOWN/SLUDGE SOLIDIFICATION. THE SEPARATED WATER IS TESTED FOR LEACHED METALS AND PH TO DETERMINE ITS PROPER DISPOSITION. THE SLUDGE VALUE AS A RAW MATERIAL SOURCE AND FUEL FOR CEMENT PRODUCTION IS ESTIMATED BY INORGANIC ELEMENTAL ANALYSIS, OIL CONTENT, AND WATER CONTENT. THIS INFORMATION IS ALSO USED TO DO A PRELIMINARY ENVIRONMENTAL AND ECONOMIC ASSESSMENT OF THE PLANNED RESIDUE USAGE. IF SUCCESSFUL, THE PROCESS WILL TAKE TWO WASTE STREAMS THAT ARE CURRENTLY LAND-FILLED AND USE THEM TO PRODUCE FEED STOCK FOR A COMMERCIAL PRODUCT.
