Abstract:
The objectives of this Phase II program are to demonstrate the feasibility of high frequency Tonpilz transducers utilizing PMN-PT single crystal "32" mode resonators poled along <110>. TRS will prepare and characterize the properties of the "32" mode samples by determining the full property matrix for this special crystal cut. These measurements will be based on IEEE standard techniques. NAVSEA Newport will determine coupling, dielectric constant, d32, and energy density of <110> oriented "32" mode resonators as a function of compressive prestress and drive field using the SDECS measurement system as well as perform compression and tensile strength measurements. Using the complete characterization of the "32" mode samples, ARL will perform complete 3D finite element modeling to optimize the tonpilz design. Finally, a single element Tonpilz resonator will be constructed by TRS coupled with assembly technology transfer and evaluated with in-water testing by ARL. In the Phase II Option, a multi-element array will be constructed and evaluated with in-water testing.
