Cost Effective Production of Large, Compositionally Uniform Piezoelectric Single Crystals

For this program TRS will optimize the zone melting Bridgman process for the production of PMN-PT crystals greater than 2" in diameter. TRS will also further refine the growth process such as growing the crystals along <001>, which will enable significant improvement to the manufacturability of the material. It will be the goal of the proposed program to refine the manufacturing process so that cost is not a limiting factor to their use in military and commercial transducer systems. The objective will be a crystal cost of < $0.30/mm3. Methods of refinement and cost reduction will include increased crystal diameter, increased uniform length, improvements to zone refinement, reduction of defects through optimized temperature uniformity, improvements to chemical composition gradient through inverse gradient charging, and growth along the <001> crystallographic orientation. The materials technology developed will add an additional crystal supply stream to increase availability for development efforts that are dramatically advancing the performance of acoustic transducers and actuators in the form of increased sensitivity, broader bandwidth, higher strains, and higher acoustic power.
