Abstract:
During the past 6 months, Cybernet has researched and develop technologies enabling a virtual haptic instrument panel (VHIP) device that can faithfully replicate the look and feel of aircraft instrument panels for simulation and training. Our approach to conduct an evaluation of candidate approaches led us to select a solution that uses a combination of Cybernet's rapidly prototyped interface components and our machine vision based interface technology. With this approach, the Navy can maximize the haptic fidelity of reconfigurable cockpit simulations, minimize the physical space needed for those simulators, and minimize reconfiguration time between different cockpit types. Phase II work continues takes the technology from phase I to create a panel creation system.
