Abstract:
A concept for an Eye-Voice Interface for Three-dimensional Applications (EVITA) is proposed as an ideal interface technology to facilitate the performance of humans required to work in three-dimensional computer graphic environments. EVITA builds on earlier research performed by the proposed principal investigator and research team which demonstrated the feasibility of versatile discrete and continuous control by combining eye-control and voice-control techniques, and with feedback and filtering employed for the eye-control channel. EVITA addresses the extension of the previous eye-voice interface research into the the three-dimensional graphic environment, addition of dynamic user-controlled recalibration to achieve consistent pointing accuracy, and of generating modular, standardized software components in order to make the EVITA interface readily adaptable to a maximum diversity of UNIX-based applications. In the proposed Phase I effort, a complete design for an EVITA interface will be produced and implemented in an experimental testbed. Alternative methods for providing interaction with the third spatial dimension (depth) will be developed along with alternative techniques for making menu selection; experiments will be designed and conducted in Phase I to guide the selection between these alternatives.
