Abstract:
Successful treatment modalities for treating patients with co-morbid pain and a substance abuse problem have been developed; however the practice community has not fully incorporated evidence-based recommendations. The pain management community needs a com prehensive, evidence-based, scalable, and affordable curriculum to address this practice gap and provide the necessary skills. We propose a suite if Internet based modules to provide education and skills training including training on the use of validated screening tools. Our curriculum will be developed through close partnerships with the American Society of Addiction Medicine (ASAM). Each module will be developed wit a interactive case-based learning approach as well as novel use of virtual standardized p atients to morror the challenges and variability of live patients.
