The proposed work aims to develop, characterize and demonstrate a novel and highly innovative engineering method for lightweight, microcrack-resistant, all-composite tanks used in the mixing, storage and transport of harsh chemicals. The work will focuson the development of novel toughened, microcrack-resistant matrix materials. Predictive engineering models will be developed to relate the structural response of the composite tank to the material characteristics. Material tests will be performed tocharacterize the micro-mechanical behavior of the toughened materials. Prototype tanks will be fabricated using the materials developed in the program, and tested to validate the design assumptions.
