Tilt-Rotor Ice Detection System

To fully exploit the adverse weather potential of tilt-rotor aircraft, an ice detection system is required both for caution and warning and for management of ice protection systems. Appropriate ice detection capability will offer improved power consumption along with improved performance (e.g., effective ice shedding) and increased safety by alerting the crew to an unexpected icing encounter. A systems methodology to identify the potential improvements in tilt-rotor ice detection is described herein with several novel methods for improving performance using the V-22 aircraft as the aircraft model for tilt-rotor applications.
