THE AIR FORCE HAS A NEED FOR HIGH PERFORMANCE, LIGHT WEIGHT, RECHARGEABLE POWER SOURCES FOR A VARIETY OF SPACE POWER APPLICATIONS INCLUDING LOW EARTH ORBIT PLATFORMS. OUR ONGOING EFFORTS IN NON-AQUEOUS RECHARGEABLE BATTERY R&D SUGGESTED THAT THE INTRINSICALLY SAFE, HIGHLY EFFICIENT AI ELECTRODE MAY BE COUPLED WITH A HIGH VOLTAGE INSERTION CATHODE IN AN A1C13-BASED MOLTEN SALT ELECTROLYTE. DURING PHASE I WE WILL SYNTHESIZE AND EVALUATE TWO RECHARGEABLE HIGH ENERGY DENSITY CATHODE MATERIALS IN CELLS AFFORDING PRACTICAL ENERGY DENSISITES OF 100 WH/KG.
