High Pressure Singlet Delta Oxygen Generator

The primary objective of CU Aerospace's Phase I work will be to investigate a relatively new, highly innovative high pressure singlet-delta oxygen generator (SOG) concept for the chemical oxygen-iodine laser (COIL). Estimates are that this SOG concept will significantly improve the pressure recovery of COIL systems while retaining efficiency. The results of the Phase I research will lay the foundation for developing a highly advanced COIL SOG for enhanced laser performance and improved pressure recovery in Phase II. Our team partner the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign will assist CU Aerospace to perform experiments to determine spray droplet size and to examine the character of the spray inside this SOG design. A SOG model will be put together to aid in the design and understanding of the generator for the Phase II program. This research will lead directly to designs that will be fabricated and tested extensively with detailed diagnostics to evaluate each design's performance attributes in Phase II with a goal of a 1/40th scale demonstration in Phase II. Use of the well-calibrated and economical COIL facility at the University of Illinois will allow this advanced SOG to be implemented and examined in detail.
