The D.N. American research and development team proposes a novel approach to improving the process of multidisciplinary optimization for composite laminate designs. In Phase I, we successfully demonstrated the feasibility of our approach to the problem. The Phase II effort leverages these results along with the team's experience-in design optimization with Genetic Algorithms, composite laminate design, and distributed Windows network programming. In Phase II we will produce a state-of-the-art, web-enabled Windows 2000 distributed Genetic Algorithm system to facilitate simulation and optimization of the composite rocket motor case design process. The hallmark of our idea is a standard, flexible, networked optimization framework comprising parallel Genetic Algorithms, .NET technology, facile network access to distributed FEA, CAD and analysis software via Web Services, and a means of accessing these functionalities via a robust Application Programming Interface (API). We will produce a fully functional prototype simulation and optimization system, with immediate benefits to the military in terms of creating optimal designs in the face of multiple participants and parameters. Our Phase I successes and our Phase II plan have already generated strong interest from the Army Research Laboratory and a major supplier of composite structures to the defense and aerospace industries.
