Gas-Kinetic Simulation of Separated Flows

This SBIR project proposes to develop a gas-kinetic CFD solver for separated turbulent flow simulation. After successfully developing prototype two-dimensional gas-kinetic BGK-NS/Burnett solvers and demonstrating the benefits of using higher-order hydrodynamic equations for separated turbulent flow simulation in Phase I, the technical objective of Phase II work will be to fully develop and validate the gas-kinetic BGK-Burnett solver for real aerospace applications. We will continue to improve the robustness, accuracy and computational efficiency of the gas-kinetic BGK-NS/Burnett solvers; to extend the solver to three-dimensional curvilinear coordinates; to develop a new set of nonlinear turbulence model for the gas-kinetic BGK-Burnett solver based on the so-called RNG (Renormalization Group) Analysis; to develop the implicit solvers for both BGK-Burnett solver and the turbulence model. The outcome of our Phase II work will be a validated gas-kinetic CFD software product ready for commercialization.
