Due to a number of challenges faced by training personnel, there is a critical need to develop innovative training management approaches and methods as a means to reduce trainer workload and assure training effectiveness (Roth, 1998). Towards this end, we propose a multi-faceted approach within an integrated, multidisciplinary research to address these operationally driven training management issues. Our goal is to identify theoretically based, empirically validated guidelines for the development of the support tools needed to optimize training management systems in these complex operational environments. From these guidelines, a performance assessment system will be developed to enhance trainer capabilities and decrease workload. As such, the current proposal seeks funding for a program of research that will allow investigation of the following critical issues: 1) a detailed and in-depth analysis of the training management process to determine where trainer workload is expected to be greatest; 2) the development of a set of training management guidelines; and, 3) the feasibility and utility of a mobile performance measurement tool to support manual data collection for onboard embedded training.
