Abstract:
Current image generator architectures force topographic features to conform to an underlying terrain model. This technique is backwards in terms of training value, because the positional accuracy of topographic features is of greater interest to pilots versus the general accuracy of a featureless terrain skin. As the cost and time associated with generating terrain databases is steadily becoming a larger percentage of the total cost of procuring training devices, a need exists for an IG architecture that addresses these issues. As the US Military transitions to a more mobile force, the Warfighter needs to rapidly visualize specific terrain features any where in the world from various sources of data. Diamond Visionics has recognized the value of this capability by developing technology that combines source data at run-time on a COTS PC, greatly reducing the time and cost required to produce high-fidelity visual databases. The technology proposed for Phase II will enable rapid modification and visualization of terrain databases for use in a wide variety of applications including training and simulation, mission planning and rehearsal, and command and control. In addition, this capability will have value in the commercial sector for applications in large-scale construction, commercial fight simulation, gaming, and entertainment.
