We propose the enhancement of the Patient Safety Rule Engine developed in Phase I as a prototype. The proposed system will be a rule based module that will monitor the Military Health Services (MHS) CPOE and PDTS and ensure safe prescriptions by alerting providers of various drug prescription related contraindications. The interface will be HL7 compliant. It will take the entire patient health profile into account and ensure that drug, laboratory tests and order sets are relevant to latest patient health information available. It will help in reduction of errors during the entire patient care delivery process by connecting the various aspects of patient care into a single streamlined safe process by providing computerized order entry decision support system. Knowledge for the rule engine is extracted from National Library of Medicine based Drug labels. The safety feature has an intuitive editor system that allows users to modify rules using a user interface. The system will conform to evolving interoperability standards and will use Unified Medical Language Systems (UMLS) Metathesaurus, Semantic Network and Lexical tools. The system will also support automated capture of ADE data and advanced surveillance of such events using an integrated GIS application.
