Abstract

EXISTINT TRAFFIC DETECTION EQUIPMENT DOES NOT PROVIDE COMPREHENSIVE SOLUTIONS FOR A WIDE VARIETY OF THEPROPOSED IVHS (INTELLIGENT VEHICLE HIGHWAY SYSTEM) FUNCTIONS AND IS FRAGMENTED AMONG DIFFERENT SENSOR TECHNOLOGIES, DVP PROPOSES TO DEVELOP A NEW, DIGITAL SIGNAL PROCESSING (DSP)-BASED VEHICLE DETECTOR TECHNOLOGY AIMED AT PROVIDING A FLEXIBLE, HIGHLY-CONFIGURABLE FRAMEWORK FOR THE ECONOMICAL AND GRACEFUL UPGRADING (RETRO-FITTING) OF THE EXISTING VEHICLE DETECTION INFRASTRUCTURE. THIS TECHNOLOGY WILL SUPPORT INPUTS FROM MULTIPLE TYPES OF SENSORS AND WILL ADDITIONALLY SUPPORT ADVANCED FUNCTIONS AND FEATURES AS INDICATED IN THE IVHS PLAN. TO DEMONSTRATE THIS TECHNOLOGY, DVP PROPOSES TO DEVELOP A UNIVERSAL VEHICLE DETECTOR (UVD), WHICH, WHILE COMPATIBLE WITH EXISTING TRAFFIC DETECTORS, IT WILL ALSO INCLUDE SPEED/LENGTH MEASUREMENTS AND VEHICLE CLASSIFICATION FUNCTIONS AND WILL PROVIDE FOR THE EVENTUAL INCORPORATION OF VEHICLE-ROADWAY COMMUNICATION. THE UVD WILL BE AUGMENTED BY DSP ALGORITHM DESIGN AND SIMULATION SOFTWARE TO SUPPORT THE EXPERIMENTAL NATURE OF THE PROPOSED DEVELOPMENT.
