Multifunctional Erosion Resistant Coatings for Turbine Engine Components

Advanced, erosion resistant thermal barrier coating (TBC) systems are desired for gas turbine engines. These coatings will increase the durability of hot-section engine components to significantly improve the use time, safety and readiness of these engines. In this work, we will use novel coating synthesis techniques that enable the deposition of advanced coating compositions, microstructures and architectures to achieve a comprehensive TBC system that provides improved resistance to damage from particle erosion and impact. During the proposed Phase II effort, DVTI will optimize our novel erosion protection concepts and determine the processing sequences required for applying such concepts onto engine components using our advanced processing techniques. The successful completion of the Phase II work will result in a novel erosion resistant coating and coating deposition process that meets engine test requirements. This will lead to the qualification of these coatings for specific engine platforms of interest to the Army and DOD. Success in this work will offer the military a pathway toward production implementation of these advanced coatings and the new deposition processing capabilities required for applying coatings of this type onto engine components.
