Not Available Knowledge of ocean surface wave spectra is important in a wide variety of military and civilian oceanographic applications. We propose a method of measuring the wave directional spectrum from a moving platform such as a submerged buoy, a submerged manned or unmanned vehicle (AUV or ROV), or a small surface vessel. Our method uses the depth cells of an acoustic Doppler current profiler (ADCP) to form a virtual spatial array of velocity sensors. Platform motion is measured independently using instrumentation suitable to the platform. Wavelet analysis seems particularly well suited to meeting the challenges of this task. Our proposal builds upon a previously demonstrated capability of using an ADCP to measure wave spectra from stationary platforms.
