Abstract

Development of actuators is the key to effective AFC! This has been stated in numerous papers and the subject of several programs. This program will produce an environmentally hardened Oscillatory Jet (OJ) Active Flow Control (AFC)system including compact lightweight integrated power electronics, powerful voice-coil actuators, flow separation sensing, and closed loop control. An existing 1/10th scale MH-47 Chinook wind tunnel model will be retrofitted with an AFC system complete with power eletronics and prospective flow separation sensing instrumentation. CFD simulations will be usd to desig the AFC system. Practical actuator installation methods will be devoloped and demonstrated on a full-scale helicopter structure. Environmental and endurance testing will be performed on this installation. Actual cost to benefit ratio of the system will be measured.
