Abstract:
During Phase I of this SBIR effort, D-STAR Engineering aimed to combine the best features of an electric-motor powered Micro Air Vehicle (e-MAV), and a micro-diesel engine, and explore the development of a JP-8 fueled hybrid diesel electric propulsion system for use on small unmanned aerial vehicles (UAVs). D-STAR had identified two approaches for development of such a hybrid-electric UAV : A longer-term approach with on-board starter generators and additional features to enhance UAV performance, and a shorter-term approach that can offer operational benefits to the e-MAV by allowing its batteries to be charged by a highly portable 600 / 700 Watt battery charger / Ground Power Unit that would use the same micro-diesel engine that has been developed for the diesel Micro Air Vehicle (d-MAV). This Phase II proposal is for the design and development of a portable Battery Charger / Mini-Generator Set.
