Abstract:

The project aims to develop a 1.5 kW "C 2.5 kW Heavy Fuel hybrid power system / portable generator set that occupies 0.6 cu. ft. of volume and weighs about 20 lbs. The proposed D-STAR system, DGS4-2k, features a Modified Commercial Off-The-Shelf (M-COTS) high-speed engine, a Permanent Magnet starter generator, electronic power conversion to use (for starting) and provide 28 V DC electric power, all accessories for stand-alone operation, and encapsulation to achieve noise levels 66 - 69 dB(A) at 7 meters. The system also has variable-speed load following to avoid wet-stacking, and has high operating frequencies to minimize transfer of noise and vibrations to the ground or the environment. For the Phase 1, the project tasks include : conversion of a cots engine into a high-speed heavy fuel engine, integration with high-speed permanent magnet starter-generator (PMSG), and development & demonstration of an integrated, encapsulated hybrid power system.
