Abstract:

THE PROPOSED RESEARCH IS AIMED AT ELIMINATING THE SIGNIFICANT GAP THAT EXISTS BETWEEN THE PERFORMANCE OF PRESENT-DAY LINEAR INDUCTION ACCELERATOR (LIA) DRIVEN MICROWAVE DEVICES AND THE LEVEL REQUIRED FOR THESE DEVICES TO BE USEFUL POWER SOURCES FOR FUTURE ADVANCED PARTICLE ACCELERATORS. DURING THE COURSE OF THIS PROJECT, WE WILL DEVELOP AN AMPLITUDE AND PHASE STABILIZATION TECHNIQUE THAT WILL COMPENSATE FOR ELECTRON-BEAM INDUCED FLUCTUATIONS IN THESE PARAMETERS. TOWARD THIS GOAL WE WILL PERFORM CIRCUIT DESIGN AND ANALYSIS, LOW-POWER FEASIBILITY TESTING WHILE SIMULATING AMPLITUDE AND PHASE ERRORS, ASSEMBLING THE NECESSARY HARDWARE FOR A PROTOTYPE STABILIZATION SYSTEM, AND PERFORMING HIGH-POWER FEASIBILITY TESTS ON A RELATIVISTIC KLYSTRON (RK) IN COLLABORATION WITH LBL AND LLNL. AN IMPROVEMENT OF ABOUT AN ORDER OF MAGNITUDE IS DEEMED FEASIBLE WITH THE PROPOSED TECHNIQUE FOR THE AMPLITUDE AND PHASE VARIATIONS MEASURED AT THE OUTPUT OF THERKS.
