Abstract:
We propose to develop an improved Explosively-Formed Penetrator (EFP) warhead that in its basic application projects a slug that pentrates the mine's case and detonates the iner explosive. In an advanced, alternate mode, the warhead will project a penetrator capable of neutralization through deflagration. The alternative mode employs reative intermetallic materials in the warhead's main component, the liner. On detonation of the warhead's explosive, these materials will react with a great release of thermal energy that will be delivered to the mine by the action of the warhead. The modified warhead provides an additional lethal mechanism underwater. The hot proudcts of the intermetallic reaction further react with the water to create an explosion capable of inflicting damage on the mines in close proximity. This technology will be developed in a warhead diameter that mets the mass limitation and allows for carrying by a frogman.
