A Small Arms Target Scoring System
Agency / Branch:
DOD / ARMY
Dynetics proposes a combination laser and digital system to produce an innovative Small Arms Target Scoring System (SATSS) for testing of small-caliber munitions. The SATSS utilizes two orthogonal, large-area, eye-safe laser beams and high-speed, charge-coupled device (CCD) electronics to measure projectile locations. With the addition of one infrared (IR) screen, the instrument readily provides velocity information and dispersion characteristics. By design, this instrument is capable of handling a wide range of projectile sizes and velocities in either single-shot or burst-mode operation. The SATSS is attractive because 1) it is insensitive to environmental issues (temperature. humidity, background light etc.), 2) the instrument is readily applied to multiple scoring applications, and 3) the setup, calibration, and operation of the instrument can be rapidly accomplished by range technicians. In addition, the SATSS appears to have a production cost consistent with Oehler's system 82 acoustic screens (around $25,000). In this proposal, details of the instrument are provided along with a Phase I development plan. The primary goal of our proposed Phase I effort is to perform a series of tests demonstrating the feasibility of producing a deliverable instrument during Phase II. SATSS will enhance the development and testing of munitions in the tri-Services. Currently, munition testing methods are sensitive to environmental factors and cannot perform with the new/future types of ammunition. The proposed instrument uses a flexible technique that is adaptable to many testing scenarios. By paying strict attention to development cost during Phase I, we believe that the SATSS can be developed into a commercially viable, range product.
