Abstract

The Army desires an extremely high resolution camera for surveillance applications. Present solutions do not possess the required resolution and are too heavy and too expensive for deployment in a UAV and too power intensive for long term deployment in unattended long term fixed position. A novel approach is required that can minimize these factors while improving resolution to achieve 0.3 meter resolution at 15,000 foot range. The Eclipse Energy systems, Inc. (Eclipse) concept uses a single lens and focal plane array to assemble a complete image by taking multiple images of the scene in rapid succession and moving the focal plane laterally in two dimensions between exposures. Eclipse Energy Systems, Inc. will reduce the weight and size of this system by changing the method used to achieve an uninterrupted image. While making a single continuous sensor, whether through a single or multiple sensor device, remains a worthy goal, simply rearranging the method used to fill in the gaps can bring large size and weight improvements.
