Abstract:
The U.S. Army requires lightweight man-portable power supplies delivering approximately 300 W and weighing less than 5 kG. In this context we propose to develop a polymer electrolyte membrane hydrogen fuel cell with an ultra lightweight cell stack which can operate efficiently at near ambient conditions without ancillary equipment for gas humidification. To achieve this we will develop efficient, highly integrated multi-electrode structures firmly bonded to a common polymer electrolyte membrane. Individual cells will be connected in series and the entire assembly will be rolled into a spiral and housed in a thin walled cylindrical vessel.
