Abstract

This program is directed towards developing catalytic membrane reactors for promoting the spontaneous conversion of logistic fuels to a gaseous feedstock compatible for subsequent introduction into the anode compartment of a solid oxide fuel cell (SOFC). These membranes behave as short circuited electrochemical cells with both ionic and electronic transport proceeding through the membrane bulk. The experimental effort will involve i) fabricating membranes incorporating preferred catalysts on each of their respective surfaces, ii) systematically evaluating membrane performance towards spontaneous reforming the logistic fuels JP-8 and DF-2 into gaseous feedstock for SOFCs, and iii) incorporating preferred components into a tubular membrane configuration where performance towards logistic fuel reforming will be evaluated.
