Abstract

The cost of hydrogen fueling stations in the United States is unacceptably high. The industry must explore any opportunity to reduce the cost of hydrogen fueling and infrastructure in order to make hydrogen refueling a commercially beneficial possibility. This project will explore and document potential for reduction of capital cost, operating cost and reduced maintenance requirements for compressors in hydrogen fueling application. A database will be created to allow straightforward comparison of existing and new compression technologies, especially capital costs, operating costs and maintenance costs including frequency of repairs and costs of labor and materials. In Phase 2, a test facility for new compressor technology will be built and tested at Lawrence Livermore National Laboratory (LLNL) and input into the database for comparison to existing technologies in order to validate the methodology. Commercial Applications and Other Benefits: Phase 1 will collect data on existing compressors at existing hydrogen fueling stations and define
