Abstract:
The objective of this Small Business Innovation Research (SBIR) project is to develop a hybrid simulation tool to address the modeling of complex electronic systems with the Finite Difference Time Domain (FDTD) method as the fundamental technique. To thisend, the FDTD technique will be fully interfaced in 3D with frequency domain full-wave techniques such as the Method of Moments (MoM) and Finite Element Method (FEM) as well as asymptotic techniques such as the uniform theory of diffraction (UTD) and raytracing. In addition, macromodels based on the impedance network boundary condition (INBC) will be incorporated in the FDTD method to model electrical phenomena that are much smaller than the FDTD cell size such as the skin effect responsible for highconductor losses at millimeter-wave frequencies. The proposed global simulation package will efficiently solve multi-scale scenarios that meet the Navy's needs in analyzing and designing complex electronic systems. For testing and validation, the softwaretool will be applied to the characterization of complex electronic systems such as large-scale propagation problems on mobile platforms as well as electromagnetic interference with electronic circuits and modeling of shielding effectiveness of compositematerials against high power electromagnetic pulses. The parallelization of the hybrid codes will be pursued at later stages of the project. The proposed software package will enable high frequency system designers in both the military and industry tomodel larger-scale electromagnetic problems at the system level. This will significantly alleviate the costly design cycles and validation experiments and measurements.
