Abstract
FBS, Inc. and The Pennsylvania State Vertical Lift Research Center of Excellence (VLRCOE), during Phase I of its Army Phase I SBIR contract, demonstrated improved ultrasonic deicing/anti-icing performance using a novel ultrasonic focusing technique. The resulting technology has shown great potential for providing a low-power, light-weight alternative to thermal-based ice protection systems currently used on rotor blades. We are now looking to further reduce the energy needed for de-icing using novel sensing concepts and wave propagation modeling. Phase II testing will fully demonstrate system effectiveness through extensive impact ice testing.
