Abstract:
A new approach in underwater Lidar (Light detection and ranging) imaging is being evaluated which should improve the contrast of submerged targets. The use of radio frequency modulation in underwater imaging applications has been suggested to discriminate against the volume backscatter clutter. Recent publications on this Hybrid Lidar-Radar (HLR) indicate that seawater behaves as a low-pass filter and therefore, if the Lidar output pulses are modulated at radio frequencies (500-1500 MHz), the effect of backscatter can be reduced, thereby improving target recognition and discrimination. In addition, it has been also shown that spatial effects of multiple forward scattering do not detrimentally affect the temporal characteristics of encoded data in a communications link. Hence the same HLR system is capable of not only identifying the threat, but also communicate to those in danger or those who can neutralize the threat.
