Abstract:
The current conflict in the Middle East has been the impetus behind tremendous advances in Signals Intelligence (SIGINT) and Electronic Warfare systems, algorithms and hardware. While most of the EW systems in use are vehicle based, such as the Army CREW II system, a major thrust towards capability of the individual soldier is required in order to maintain ground superiority. A particular area of interest addressed in this proposal is a compact, wideband, portable system for Geolocation of RF signals of interest. The key elements of the system are antennas, receivers, and algorithm / processor. A portable system poses many challenges. The instantaneous broad bandwidth of the antenna requires innovative antenna design. The vicinity of the user can significantly deteriorate the received signals, and as a result the Geolocation accuracy. Another major issue is adapting the current Geolocation algorithms that are based on data from omni directional probes rather than realistic installed antenna patterns. Finally miniaturization of the components and in particular the antenna is another challenge that needs to be addressed. A key element of our proposal is a suite of wearable, deployable and concealed antennas and RF products that individually and collectively serve as GeoLocation and SIGINT sensors.
