AN IMPROVED CARBON MONOXIDE ELECTROCHEMICAL DETECTOR IS PROPOSED FOR VALIDATING SMOKING BEHAVIOR AND DEMONSTRATING THE HEALTH RISK OF SMOKING. THE PROPOSED POTENTIODYNAMIC MEASUREMENT SHOULD BE UNAFFECTED BY GASES AND VAPORS THAT ARE OFTEN FOUND IN A SMOKER'S BREATH (H2S, ETHANOL, ACETONE,ETC.). THESE COMPOUNDS WOULD BE EXPECTED TO INTERFERE IN A STANDARD (SINGLE-POTENTIAL) MEASUREMENT OF CO. THESE PHASE I RESULTS ARE EXPECTED TO CONFIRM PRELIMINARY RESULTS THAT DEMONSTRATED INSTRUMENT LINEARITY WITH CO PARTIAL PRESSURE. MATERIALS AND ELECTROCHEMICAL PARAMETERS WILL BE CHOSEN TO MINIMIZE OR ELIMINATE THE EFFECT OF POTENTIALLY INTERFERING SUBSTANCES. IF THIS WORK IS SUCCESSFUL, PHASE II WILL BE DEVOTED TO IMPROVING THE INSTRUMENTATION AND VALIDATING THE METHOD IN CLINICAL STUDIES. PHASE III WOULD BE USED TO COMMERCIALIZE THE INSTRUMENTATION.
