Abstract:

ELECTROCHEMICAL ULTRACAPACITORS STORE ENERGY BY UTILIZING DOUBLE LAYER AND SURFACE REDOX TYPE PROCESSES. HYBRID POWERSOURCES THAT COMBINE CONVENTIONAL BATTERIES WITH ELECTROCHEMICAL ULTRACAPACITORS ARE BEING DESIGNED TOWARD ELECTRIC VEHICLE AS WELL AS ADVANCED SPACE APPLICATIONS. GINER, INC. HAS DEVELOPED AN ALL-SOLID PROTON EXCHANGE MEMBRANE (PEM) BASED ULTRACAPACITOR. THE PROTON-EXCHANGE-MEMBRANE CAPACITOR TECHNOLOGY REPRESENTS A POTENTIALLY MORE COST EFFECTIVE, LIGHTER-WEIGHT, MORE RELIABLE, SAFER AND LONGER LIFE ALTERNATIVE TO OTHER CURRENTCAPACITOR SYSTEMS. THE MAJOR LIMITATION OF STATE-OF-THE-ARTELECTROCHEMICAL ULTRACAPACITORS IS THE MAXIMUM AVAILABLE ENERGY DENSITY, AND IMPROVEMENT OF ONE ORDER OF MAGNITUDE IS DESIRABLE. IN THE PROPOSED PROGRAM METHODS ARE ADDRESSED TO INCREASE THE ENERGY DENSITY OF THESE CAPACITORSBY INCREASING THE DISPERSION OF PARTICULATES USED TO MAKE THE ELECTRODES. IMPROVEMENTS OF 5-7 TIMES ARE ANTICIPATED AT THE END OF THIS PROGRAM.
