Abstract:

THE PHASE I RESEARCH INVOLVES COMPUTATIONAL WORK, ANALYSIS AND PLANNING FOR PHASE II WORK. THE COMPUTATIONS ARE DIRECT NUMERICAL SIMULATIONS (DNS) OF THE EQUATIONS OF MOTION AT A LOW REYNOLDS NUMBER. ON THIS BASIS, THE SUB-GRID SCALE (SGS) MODELLING REQUIRED FOR LARGE-EDDY SIMULATIONS (LES) DURING PHASE II SHALL BE FORMULATED. IN ADDITION, THE PLAN FOR AN EXPERIMENT, WITH WHICH TO CORROBORATE THE LES PREDICTION DETAILS, SHALL BE STRUCTURED. THE ROLE OF THE DNS/LES DATA IS THREE-FOLD. FIRST, THEIR TIME-AVERGE ALLOWS QUANTITATIVE EVALUATION OF THREE TIME-AVERAGED TURBULENT EXHAUST MIXING MODELS: A) INTEGRAL, B) AXISYMMETRIC DIFFERENTIAL AND C) FULLY THREE-DIMENSIONAL, WHICH SHALL BE PROVIDED BY SUBCONTRACTORS TO BE SELECTED DURING PHASE I. THE ACCURACY OF THE THREE MODELS IN PREDICTING THE EXHAUST TEMPERATURE AND EMISSIVITY SHALL BE ESTABLISHEDDURING PHASE II LONG WITH A CHARACTERIZATION OF THEIR COST AND EASE OF USE. THE SECOND ROLE FOR THE LES DATA IS TO PROVIDE TURBULENT FLUCTUATION MOMENT INFORMATION WITH WHICH THE THREE MODELS MAY BE 'TUNED'. FINALLY, THE DNS/LES COMPUTATIONS PROVIDE A WAY TO CHARACTERIZE THE INHERENT UNCERTAINTY, I.E., THE (POSSIBLE LRAGE) DEPARTURE OF ANY SINGLE REALIZATION FROM THE TIME-AVERAGED FLOW.
