Multi-Channel, High-Resolution, Dual-Function Signal and Time Digitizer
70864 Fast, low power, low noise, high sensitivity, radiation resistant electronic instrumentation is essential for readout of particle detectors in nuclear and high-energy physics experiments. With traditional readout methods, the information content of low-level, fast signals from a detector is distorted by noise pick-up and crosstalk in analog transmission lines. Conversion of the detector response into digital form would not only preserve the original signal quality but also facilitate data acquisition and processing. This project will develop a multi-channel digitizer that combines the analog-to-digital and time-to-digital conversion functions. This digitizer technology will take advantage of high-speed, low power superconductive electronics that provide radiation hardness and very high sensitivity. In Phase I, a single-channel of dual-function digitizer will be designed, by integrating an analog-to-digital converter (ADC) and a time-to-digital converter (TDC) front-end to a common digital counter through a selectable interface. These circuits will be fabricated and experimentally evaluated. A multi-channel, multi-chip digitizer architecture for Phase II implementation of a system with standard interface will also be investigated. Commercial Applications and Other Benefits as described by the awardee: The dual-function (ADC/TDC) digitizer technology should find use as a digital readout for a variety of detectors in nuclear and high-energy physics, spectroscopy, astronomy, and biomedical imaging. In addition, it should find use in commercial and military communication systems and for advanced instrumentation enabling superior diagnostics.
