Design and Fabrication Issues of a High Resolution Fragment Separator for RIA
79798B The design of a high-resolution fragment separator for a facility such as the Rare Isotopes Accelerator (RIA) requires the use of magnets that offer special combinations of magnetic field, aperture, high order correction, and radiation resistance. Although optical designers can optimize the layout of the magnets and their characteristics, a complete optimization must account for other aspects of the fabrication and operation processes. This project will develop an integrated design that iterates between the requirements of the optical solution, the fabrication process, the physical layout, and the magnet design. Phase I will address two specific tasks related to the current design of the fragment separator: (1) assess the fabrication issues of a large aperture quadrupoles, and (2) study radiation issues regarding lifetime and cryostatic load of the magnets. Commercial Applications and Other Benefits as described by the awardee: The integrated design process should provide a highly improved fragment separator design for the RIA and robust fabrication capability for industrial use.
