Passive Dry Bay Fire Extinguishing System

In order to reduce aircraft vulnerabilities to accidental or intentional ignition threats in wing dry bays, the design and development of an entirely passive fire suppression system is required. Current passive fire protection systems are limited in terms of suppression activation, weight, or fire re-ignition. Engineering and Scientific Innovations, Inc. (ESI) proposes the development of a novel, passive fire protection system initiated through thermal detection of a fire. The result is multiple, stand-alone units capable of suppressing a fire while not necessarily depleting the available suppressant for the dry bay should another fire scenario occur. BENEFITS: The proposed system offers inherent technical and financial benefits over current systems. Only the units in close proximity along the propagation path react to a fire regardless of the ignition mechanism, yielding extra units should re-ignition occur. Furthermore, the simple design allows for fast and easy installation times, effectively reducing overall labor costs and allowing the system to be retrofitted to current airframes without difficulty.
