Abstract:
Advanced Army C2 technologies are becoming ever more present in today's wars, enabling Commanders at all levels to have a greater understanding of the battlefield. However, current C2 technology does not actively measure, define, or represent the Commander's "contextual framework", which can lead to a failure by Commanders and supporting teams to retain important contextual information over time. To fill this gap, Aptima, Inc. proposes to develop the Cross-Context Ontology Reasoning Environment (CrossCORE), a unique solution for managing contextual information within C2 systems. CrossCORE will be built upon an agent-based framework that leverages and expands upon Aptima's context definition research, and formally encapsulates contextual elements into an ontology housed within intelligent agents. A unique aspect of this ontology will be an implicit model that measures Commander interactions with a C2 system to make inferences about activities and goals, which will provide key inputs to the CrossCORE ontology. The CrossCORE agent will rely on a formalized, data-driven contextual framework to mediate the flow of C2 data by retaining critical contextual information, adding saliency to particular elements of interest on the common operating picture, and collaborating with other CrossCORE agents to enhance the level of shared situational awareness between Commanders.
