Abstract:
Some of the United States Special Operations Command (USSOCOM) greatest concerns are to maintain the pilot's ability to see clearly and to provide to the aircraft occupants a greater degree of UV rays, laser and ballistic protection than being currently afforded. However, the weight penalty suffered by the installation of current transparent armor systems would require significant loss of payload or range, which is not acceptable to SOCOM. Recent composite material developments using advanced optical aliphatic TPU resins as adhesive interlayer demonstrate potential not only to meet/exceed all ballistic, UV rays and laser protection requirements; but also to improve the abrasion and erosion surface properties of the windscreen design for rotary wing aircraft to increase its useful life. INTER Materials is in a unique position to assist SOCOM with the design, manufacturing and testing a durable, light weight, high ballistic performance rotary wind aircraft windscreen system with UV rays and laser protection based on: 1) INTER Materials has developed an innovative TPU technology as adhesive interlayer to provide laser protection in light weight laminated ballistic transparent armor for windscreens; 2) INTER Materials' technology would allow SOCOM to incorporate superior ballistic and laser protection with significant weight and cost reduction; 3) INTER Materials advanced optical aliphatic TPU has great commercial potential because it takes advantage of existing TPU film and laminated transparent armor manufacturing infrastructure and; 4) INTER Materials has ongoing working relationships with a well established US laminated transparent armor manufacturer and international military markets.
