65149 Currently, no technology exists for the direct, small scale, production of enriched air with oxygen concentrations of 40-70%. This project will develop surface selective membrane technology to economically produce enriched air for markets such as fuel processing for fuel cells and medical applications. The technology relies on the controlled surface modification of inorganic microporous membranes. Phase I will evaluate selective surface adsorption membranes for producing enriched air. The technical and economical feasibility of the membrane approach will be determined. Commercial Applications And Other Benefits as described by awardee: The technology should have direct use in producing enriched air with oxygen concentrations in the 40-70% range. The enriched air should be useful in applications such as fuel processing for fuel cells and in small volume medical applications.
