Abstract

RECENT WORK HERE HAS DEMONSTRATED THAT SILICON NITRIDE CAN BE SUPERPLASTICALLY FORGED TO NEAR NET SHAPE. IN THIS PROPOSAL WE SEEK TO INVESTIGATE WHETHER FORGING ALSO IMPROVES THE RELIABILITY OF THE COMPONENTS. EXPERIENCE WITHHIGH TEMPERATURE METALLIC ALLOYS SHOWS THAT FORGING IMPROVESTHE PREDICTABILITY OF FLAW SENSITIVE MECHANICAL PROPERTIES, SUCH AS HIGH CYCLE FATIGUE. IN PRIOR WORK WE HAVE FOUND THAT BILLET TO BILLET VARIATION IN THE FLEXURAL STRENGTH OF FORGED SILICON NITRIDE WAS LESS THAN 15%, BASED ON DATA FROMEIGHT SAMPLES. WE NOW PROPOSE TO CARRY OUT A FULL LENGTH STATISTICAL STUDY AND MEASURE THE WEIBULL MODULUS FOR SUPERPLASTICALLY FORGED SILICON NITRIDE, IN PHASE I RESEARCH. IF DATA SHOW A SIGNIFICANTLY HIGHER WEIBULL MODULUS THAN PUBLISHED IN THE LITERATURE, THEN IN PHASE II WE WILL PROPOSE TO PRODUCE CERAMIC COMPONENTS, SUCH AS A CERAMIC BEARING RACE, BY SUPERPLASTIC FORGING AND SUBMIT THECOMPONENTS TO PROOF TESTING.
