In plasma research, analog data must be recorded with improved accuracy and resolution. The solution must provide low cost, densely packaged multichannel digitizers with improved signal to noise ratios and increased memory size to extend time range. This project will evaluate new, low cost, high speed analog-to-digital converters (ADCs), and multichannel layouts will be made utilizing small, flatpack integrated circuits, and good recorder design. In Phase I, the latest ADCs, amplifiers, memory packaging techniques, and programmable logic devices will be evaluated. A number of digitizers will be designed at speeds of interest to insure good overall accuracy and low crosstalk. The features that could be made available for CAMAC and VME packaging will be determined. Modules will be designed in Phase II.
Commercial Applications and Other Benefits as described by the awardee: The recorder modules should have speed and channel densities that are not presently available. Sales to commercial users as well as other government research laboratories should be expected._
